On the sixth day of Christmas, Pinewood Steading gave to me – Urquhart Castle!
Undoubtedly one of my favourites, but maybe because it’s a ruin and I love ruins! Over by Drumnadrochit, on the shores of Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle is about 30 mins drive from Pinewood. Or, arrive by boat via @lochnesscruises and enjoy a trip on the famous Loch Ness. The castle was once one of Scotland’s largest and was the scene of much conflict during its 500 years as a Medieval fortress. Eventually during the Jacobite Risings, the castle was blown up and the iconic ruins now remain. There is still a lot see though, from the Grant Tower, Great Hall, prison cells, and the full sized Trebuchet. There’s also a cafe but we would recommend Cafe Eighty2 in Drumnadrochit itself.
